U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to impose new sanctions on Iran, perhaps as early as next week to ensure it does not develop nuclear weapons, the White House said on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

“We are 100 percent committed to making sure that Iran does not have nuclear weapons,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told a news briefing.

“We’re going to continue to put maximum pressure, enormous sanctions on them. All of the sanctions that were in place before the deal are back in place and we are preparing to add additional sanctions that may come as early as next week,” she added.

Her comments came a day after Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States was withdrawing from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and would reimpose sanctions on Iran.

National Security Adviser John Bolton later said the deal “was fundamentally flawed” as it does not prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons nor does it have adequate inspection provision that allows the U.S. to have confidence that all of Iran's nuclear-related activities were detected.

The European Union said it would remain in the agreement and will do so “as long as Iran continues to implement its nuclear related commitments, as it is doing so far.”
