Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat on Wednesday morning met the Guatemalan Ambassador to Israel, as well as Guatemala's Foreign Ministry Director General.

The three discussed Guatemala's plan to move its embassy to Jerusalem on May 16, as per Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales' request.

"I congratulate Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales and the Guatemalan government for its courageous decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem," Barkat said.

"I call on other countries as well to follow in the footsteps of the US and Guatemala, and to move their embassies to Jerusalem.

"I have promised the Ambassador and the Foreign Ministry Director General that the Jerusalem municipality will do everything possible in order to ensure a quick, smooth, move."

Earlier this week, Romania's Foreign Minister said his country would consider moving its embassy to Jerusalem.
