Special counsel Robert Mueller III told US President Donald Trump's lawyers last month that the US President is not currently considered to be a criminal target, even though investigation of him is continuing, The Washington Post reported.

In March, Mueller said he was investigating Trump for Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election. He also said that he is preparing a report on Trump's "potential obstruction of justice" as well as his actions while in office.

Completion of the investigation requires interviewing Trump himself, The Washington Post noted.

In February, Mueller brought charges against 13 Russian nationals and three Russian groups for interfering with the 2016 US elections.

According to The Hill, the Russian efforts, which began in 2014, were connected to the so-called Internet Research Agency, a shadowy operation based in St. Petersburg that leveraged Facebook and other social media platforms to spread divisive messages leading up to the 2016 election.

Trump asked why former US President Barack Obama did nothing to thwart Russia's efforts, since he was president during 2014, as well as during the lead-up to the 2016 elections.
