US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman rejected suggestions stemming from an interview published yesterday, that the US was interested in replacing PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

Interviewed for the latest edition of Shvi'i this week, Friedman was quoted as saying, “If Abbas is not interested in sitting with us and Israel, I’m sure we'll find another official to work with. It's important to make clear: The vacuum will be filled. The PA Chairman is not irreplaceable in our view.”

This morning, Friedman tweeted that reports that the US was seeking to replace Abbas were inaccurate.

“I was misquoted in various reports stemming from an interview that published today,” he wrote. “The United States is not seeking ‘to replace’ Mahmoud Abbas. It is for the Palestinian people to choose its leadership.”
