Arutz Sheva spoke to former US President Richard Nixon's son-in-law, New York State Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox, at the National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) dinner in New York/ The discussion centered on previously unknown details of Nixon's actions to help the Jewish State during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and Cox's analysis of the Obama and Trump Administrations' divergent approaches towards Israel.

"President Nixon in the Yom Kippur War in '73 saved Israel. Overruled Henry Kissinger and Schlesinger quibbling about these things, [Nixon said] 'I don't care, just load it on the planes and ship everything we can over to Israel."

What motivated him to do that?

"It came from the heart. It's one of those great moments where he just did it. You know, just, damn the torpedoes, get it done."

As a son-in-law, this is something you saw from up close?

"Sure, we were living in the White House at the time, and it was a time that our ally needed us and he was going to be there for Israel. It's interesting; several weeks later, the Israeli army, knowing it was going to be resupplied - they went on the offensive and trapped Sadat's armies in the southern Sinai, and at that point President Nixon said 'Stop, let's save face for Sadat,' and that set up the whole relationship, kept the Russians out until President Obama let them back in, and it put us on both sides and led to much better relations between Israel and its neighbors in the end."

Regarding the Obama Administration, how do you explain what happened there?

"An important thing then is the Russians were out, the Americans were in on both sides and were able to bring about much better relations that evolved from that fact. Obama didn't understand that, and just on political grounds to show how bad his policy was with respect to Israel, we [Republicans] won the 9th Congressional district in Queens, the most Jewish district in the United States. They [the Democrats] picked David Weprin, who I believe is here tonight; we're great friends, but he was their candidate, from a very well-known Jewish family here. His father had been Speaker of the Assembly in New York State. We picked, actually, a Catholic to run, and we won, and the whole issue was Obama's Israeli policies. It just proves how bad for Israel Obama's policies were, that on the ground here in the most Jewish congressional district he lost.

"Currently, Israel is in bigger danger than it's ever been since the start of the Yom Kippur War in '73. You now have, assisted by the Russians, the Iranians, and you have Hezbollah, right on the border there, more than 100,000 high-grade missiles; not like the ones used from the Gaza Strip, but much better missiles, aimed at Israel now, so there's a stand-off there. And you have Iran right on the border of the Golan Heights. And the Trump Administration in the middle of all this said, 'OK, we're gonna move our embassy to Jerusalem. That is saying 'we support Israel 100%."
