Survivor who escaped Auschwitz dies at 98

Kazimierz Piechowski, who was part of a daring escape from Auschwitz, passes away in the port city of Gdansk.

Kazimierz Piechowski, who was known for his spectacular escape from the Auschwitz Nazi death camp, passed away on Friday at the age of 98, the German news agency dpa reported.

Piechowski died in the port city of Gdansk, according the Institute of National Remembrance.

In June 1940, Piechowski and other Polish political prisoners were taken by convoy to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Two years later, he and two fellow prisoners managed their escape by stealing weapons, uniforms and a vehicle belonging to their SS guards, according to the report.

After securing his freedom, he fought with the Home Army, the dominant Polish resistance movement, against the Nazis.

Piechowski was apprehended after the war by local communist authorities and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

His wartime escape was featured in a BBC documentary in which Piechowski starred as himself.
