Police arrested 17 people this morning, including senior officials of the Rishon Letzion municipality, as part of an investigation into suspicions of corruption in local government.

Among the detainees are two parliamentary assistants to MKs and officials.

Coalition Chairman, MK David Bitan (Likud), also arrived at the offices of police’s Lahav 433 unit in Lod, where he is to be questioned in the affair.

In an interview with Channel 2 last night, Bitan stated that the timing of the investigation was problematic, suggesting that the investigation was aimed at thwarting legislation against police announcing recommendations to indict at the end of investigations, and being promoted by MK David Amsalem (Likud) and himself..

However, MK Bitan stated that when asked, he would report to the investigation and answer all questions, “no problem.”

Police, on the other hand, say that the investigation into the affair involving the Rishon Letzion municipality began about a year ago, and the claims of tendentious timing are baseless. However, if that is the case, Biton's friends countered, why not put off the investigation for a week and refrain from publicizing it?
