Why should we need to 'see the light'?

When people say they saw the light, what light are they talking about?

People say things like, “I saw the light!” which means that they comprehend something.

In this context it is not talking about actual physical light, like from the sun or a light bulb, but intellectual “light.”

The light to which they refer is more profound than they may know, and it is really the underlying reason why some bright people believe in God and others do not. What light are we talking about?
