The IDF has decided to shorten the time soldiers must wait for promotions, Yisrael Hayom reported.

Unlike many other armies around the world, enlisted IDF soldiers receive promotions based on time served as opposed to merit. The IDF has decided to shorten the promotion timetable after mandatory service for new male recruits was cut to 32 months.

Under the new guidelines, an IDF combat soldier will be promoted to First Sergeant after 24 months of service, as opposed to the current 28.

Soldiers who graduated a commanders course will become First Sergent after 22 months, instead of 24 months.

Combat support soldiers, who are soldiers that serve on combat bases but are not combat soldiers, will be promoted to First Sergeant after 28 months, down from 29.

All the other IDF soldiers who previously became a First Sergeant after 32 months will now reach that rank after 30 months.

In addition, IDF officers will be promoted to Lieutenant immediately after finishing their mandatory service and will not have to wait a year, as was previously the case.
