A controlled explosion was carried out on Wednesday at the Angel underground station in north London after a security alert, The Guardian reports.

Police were alerted to a “suspect package” in the Islington area and reportedly evacuated the station. Social media users reported hearing up to two explosions.

The Metropolitan police tweeted, “We were dealing with a suspect package in #Islington. A controlled explosion was carried out, and the incident was stood down at 19.34hrs.”

Islington police tweeted the same message.

The station remains closed and witnesses have reported a police cordon in place in roads around the area, according to The Guardian.

The circumstances surrounding the placement of the suspicious package at the stage are not yet known. It also unknown whether the incident was terror-related.

Last month, a bomb went off during morning rush hour in a packed carriage at the Parsons Green station. 30 people were wounded.

The Islamic State (ISIS) group claimed responsibility for Friday's explosion, though interior minister Amber Rudd voiced doubt over that claim.

Police have arrested several suspects in connection with the attack.
