Brig. Gen. (res.) Shai Brosh was named Tuesday as the former Shayetet 13 commander who was arrested earlier this week in connection to the “submarine affair” involving crimes suspected by police to have been committed around the purchase of three submarines from the German company ThyssenKrupp - including bribery, fraud, tax evasion and money laundering.

Brosh is suspected of taking bribes and of breach of trust.

Brosh, decorated for his service during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, arrived at the hearing relating the suspicions without an attorney, and asserted that he did not need legal representation. The court then appointed him a lawyer from the Public Defender's Office who claimed that Brosh had nothing to do with the affair.

Earlier this week, the remand of Eliezer Sandberg, who was science minister in 2003 and served as infrastructure minister in 2004, was extended until Wednesday in connection with the affair.

Rami Tayeb, an advisor to Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, was also questioned and kept in remand until Wednesday, police said.
