Eight people were found dead inside a tractor-trailer outside a San Antonio Walmart Saturday, police said.

30 people were found inside the truck on the 101 degree summer day. They were taken to local hospitals after being held in the non air conditioned vehicle.

The driver of the truck other vehicles had arrived and taken people from the truck before police were called.

Police Chief William McManus called the case "a human trafficking crime this evening" and “a horrific tragedy.”

Chief McManus said that several juveniles were among the dead.

The driver of the truck has been arrested.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said that the 30 survivors all suffered from heat-related symptoms, including dehydration and heat-stroke. 20 of the survivors were reported to be in serious to extremely-critical condition.

“We are very fortunate that there weren’t 38 people who were locked inside of this vehicle dead,” he says.

19 people died inside a tractor-trailer in a similar human-trafficking case in Texas in 2003.
