An American citizen of Iranian descent has been sentenced by an Iranian court to 10 years in jail after being convicted of spying, an Iranian spokesperson declared Sunday.

Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejheie, an Iranian court spokesman, reported to the Fars media outlet that a US citizen had been arrested, tried, and sentenced.

No details regarding the identity of the citizen were released, nor were the dates of the trial disclosed.

The American citizen in question had been arrested after he or she was caught allegedly "gathering information" Mohseni-Ejheie said.

The Trump administration protested the sentence, demanding the citizen's immediate release.

"The Iranian regime continues to detain US citizens and other foreigners on fabricated national-security related changes," a State Department official said, CNN reported. "The safety and security of US citizens remains a top priority. All US citizens, especially dual nationals considering travel to Iran, should carefully read our latest travel warning."
