The two young men killed in a traffic accident north of Eilat Thursday have been identified as an active duty IDF soldier and a reserve soldier.

The two were killed after their truck overturned on Route 12, three miles north of the southern port city of Eilat.

The accident occurred as the two soldiers – one of them the driver of the truck – were taking part in preparations for an army operation near the Israel-Egypt border.

Military Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the fatal accident. A parallel investigation will be conducted by a committee established by the army’s Technology and Logistics division.

MDA teams and IDF medical teams who rushed to the scene of the accident provided medical treatment for the two injured 20 year-olds, whose condition was initially defined as critical.

After efforts proved unsuccessful, the two young men were confirmed dead at the scene. Their bodies were extricated from the truck by firefighters.

As a result of the accident Route 12 was blocked to traffic in both directions between Eilat and the Sayarim junction.
