The defense establishment on Monday instructed Ben Gurion Airport to shut down their air space due to a security operation that cannot be reported, Channel 10 reported.

The closure of the airspace has been blamed for numerous flight delays and cancellations at the airport Monday evening.

The Israel Airport Authority denied the report and stated that the airspace was never closed.

"The skies have not been closed,” the authority said in a statement.

IAA spokesman Ofer Lefler told AFP that there had been the delays were due to the airport's need to widen the gaps between takeoffs and landings at the peak of the congested summer travel season.
