President Donald Trump, who once suggested he may have recordings of his conversations with former FBI Director James Comey, confirmed on Thursday that he never taped any talks with Comey and at that he knew of no such recordings.

Last month, the president suggested in a tweet that he may have recordings of the conversations between himself and Comey, writing: “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”

The White House refused to comment on Trump’s statement, with Press Secretary Sean Spicer saying that Trump “has nothing further to add on that.”

But on Thursday, Trump revealed that he had not recorded any of his conversations with the former FBI director, nor was he aware of any such tapes being produced by others. Trump did suggest, however, that the talks may have been recorded by a third party.

“With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea whether there are "tapes" or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings,” Trump wrote.

Earlier this month, the president pledged he would disclose whether he had any tapes of his conversations with Comey.

"I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future.”
