President Trump taunted the Democrats on their losing five special congressional elections despite having spent huge sums on campaigns.
The president tweeted:" Well, the Special Elections are over and those that want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN are 5 and O! All the Fake News, all the money spent = 0."
For many Republicans the latest victories are a continuation of the presidential victory and are an affirmation that the Republican victory was not a passing episode. Handel is not just a Republican but also a supporter of Trump's policies on many issues, including erecting a wall along the border with Mexico.
Handel also mentioned Trump in her victory speech, which brought loud shouts of support for the president.
The Republicans are now eyeing the midterm-elections in 2018, when a third of the Senatorial seats will be up for election. Wall Street Journal reporter Shelby Holliday said that "it's impossible to exaggerate the despondency Democrats are feeling at present" and that this was a "great victory for the White House."
