Army Chief Prosecutor Colonel Sharon Zagagi-Pinhas is scheduled to meet with a member of the legal defense team for former IDF Sgt. Elor Azariya Thursday for discussion on a possible compromise agreement between prosecutors and the defendant.

Azariya shot and killed a wounded Arab terrorist shortly after a terror attack in Hevron in March 2016. In January an IDF court in Tel Aviv found Azariya guilty of manslaughter, rejecting his claim that he fired because the terrorist appeared to be reaching for a concealed explosive device.

In February, Azariya was sentenced to 18 months in jail for the shooting.

After the sentence was handed down, well-known attorney Yoram Sheftel volunteered to join Azariya’s legal defense team for an appeal of the conviction.

The prosecution also filed an appeal, arguing that the sentence should be increased from 18 months to 3-5 years.

The army appeals court charged with handling the case recommended the two sides meet for negotiation and attempt to reach a compromise agreement, a request accepted by Sheftel but rejected by the prosecution.

When the court pressed prosecutors on the issue, however, Zagagi-Pinhas agreed to meet with Sheftel, who will represent Azariya’s defense team in negotiations.
