An Uzbekistan citizen who is suspected of having performed the ramming attack in Stockholm last Friday has admitted in court that he was behind the attack.

Rakhmat Akilov, 39, the suspect, confessed to his crime during a pre-trial hearing in Stockholm. Akilov is an illegal immigrant who applied for residence in 2014, but was rejected in June 2016.

Akilov stole a truck and drove it into a group of pedestrians, killing 4 and wounding 15. After he admitted to his crime, the hearing continued behind closed doors, due to a request by the prosecution.

The Court ruled Akilov will remain in custody, awaiting his trial on terrorism charges. Akilov is likely to be indicted by 11 May, unless the prosecutor requires more time for the investigation.

A second man has also been detained in relation to the attack, but his name and suspected role in the incident have not been publicized. His hearing will take place on Wednesday.
