A 20-year old man was injured Monday in an accident involving firecrackers in Jerusalem.

The incident occurred in the Bayit Vegan neighborhood of the capital early Monday afternoon during the second day of the Purim holiday (Shushan Purim).

During the celebrations, a firecracker thrown in the victim’s general direction exploded close to his head, causing serious injuries to his face and eyes.

MDA was alerted shortly after the accident occurred, and first responders were dispatched to the scene.

MDA paramedics treated the man, then evacuated him to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, where his condition has been listed as moderate.

“When we reached the scene,” said MDA first responder Itzik Goldfarb, “we saw a young man roughly 20 years of age who was suffering from injuries to his face and eyes after a firecracker went off injuring him and blasting pieces of glass from his glasses into his eyes.”

“We provided him first aid at the scene, including stopping the bleeding, then evacuated him to the hospital while he is in moderate condition.”

Following the accident, an MDA spokesperson called upon the public not to purchase or use fireworks or firecrackers, noting that they are illegal under Israeli law and pose a significant safety risk to both users and bystanders.
