The new Democratic National Committee chairman, Thomas Perez, took to the air Sunday to demand an independent investigation into last November’s presidential election, suggesting President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin may have conspired to “rig” the election.

Perez spoke with CNN on Sunday hours after President Trump blasted the DNC race, suggesting that Perez, a former Obama cabinet member and close Clinton ally, prevailed because of establishment backing, despite popular support in the Democratic base for his rival, Congressman Keith Ellison.

“The race for DNC Chairman was, of course, totally ‘rigged,’” Trump wrote. “Bernie's guy, like Bernie himself, never had a chance. Clinton demanded Perez!”

After winning the DNC race, Perez tapped Ellison to serve as DNC Deputy Chairman.

"Congressman Ellison and I got a good kick out of that. Donald Trump up again in the morning tweeting about us,” Perez told CNN.

“Our unity, as a party, is our greatest strength. And it’s his worst nightmare. And frankly, what we need to be looking at is whether this election was rigged by Donald Trump and his buddy, Vladimir Putin."

"We need an independent investigation,” Perez added.
