The United States Mint is set to release on April 6, 2017 a gold coin featuring Lady Liberty as a black woman.

The new 24-karat coin will have a $100 face value and weigh approximately one ounce. Commemorating the 225th anniversary of the United State Mint's coin production, approximately 100,000 coins will be minted and sold, mostly to collectors. Profits from the sales will go to the US Treasury.

Future coins in the series will be released every two years and are expected to feature Lady Liberty as Indian, Hispanic, and Asian, to "reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of the United States," the Mint said in a statement.

In addition, approximately 100,000 silver coins with the same image will be produced, to be sold for $40-50 each.

On the "head" side, the black Lady Liberty will have a crown of gold stars on her hair and a toga-like dress. On the "tail" side there will be an eagle in flight. The classic "In G-d we trust", along with the years 1792 and 2017, will also be imprinted on the coin.
