In the wake of Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit's announcement that he did not intend to get involved in the implementation of the Western Wall arrangement as it is a political issue, Moshe Gafni, the head of the Knesset finance committee, attacked high court justices for intervening on political issues which do not relate to them.

"The subject of the Western Wall arrangement is not a political issue, it is a definitive issue," said Gafni in an interview with the Yated Ne'eman newspaper. "Is there Judaism in the state of Israel or not?"

Gafni claimed that high court justices are involved in the political sphere and are interfering with the Knesset's work. "The political influence on this topic stems from the high court justices' unprofessional position. They are against UTJ, and their intervention on this issue is totally unacceptable from a professional viewpoint."

Gafni also attacked them for offering advice to the Reform community. "They advise Reform Jews on what to petition and what not to petition, what to present and what to withdraw and the supposedly religious judge is the most effusive in his assistance to the Reform community."

Gafni was referring to judge Elyakim Rubinstein who in a hearing last week sided with Reform petitioners and even gave them guidance.

Gafni insisted that the Haredim would continue to fight against spiritual damage to the Western Wall. "We will fight this decision and demand government intervention to prevent spiritual problems at the holiest place to the Jewish people. We will never recognize the heretical and fake Jewish movements which twist a knife into the holy Torah."
