Interior Minister Aryeh Deri (Shas) was revealed on Tuesday night to be the subject of a corruption investigation, but according to reports another senior politician is also being investigated in the case.

Deri's investigation was approved by Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, and while further details remain under a gag order, no criminal investigation has been launched against him yet. Just this January Deri returned to the post of Interior Minister, 22 years after he abused the same position by taking bribes.

According to a Haaretz report on Tuesday night, aside from Deri another senior politician is being investigated by the police.

Police are said to have been investigating the second key figure for the last several months on suspicions of bribery. That investigation is reportedly still in the initial stages, and began after the Knesset elections in March 2015.

The second senior politician, who has not yet been summoned for investigation, is being examined on suspicions of "funding political activities by interested parties."

Given the timing of the investigation after the elections and the suspicions mentioned, there is a possibility that the incident may be related to how Shas activists were revealed to have conducted a massive voter fraud campaign against the Yachad - Ha'am Itanu and Otzma Yehudit joint list, subtly invalidating voting slips to steal the democratic rights of the party's voters nationwide. However, details on the exact nature of the investigation have yet to be released.

Before Deri was publicly named, a report on Channel 2 earlier on Tuesday said that a senior political figure and a close associate of that figure were involved in alleged corruption. It would appear the second senior politician indicated by Haaretz may be the close associate indicated by Channel 2, although the figure's identity remains under a gag order.

A senior Shas MK spoke to Walla on Wednesday about the investigation into Deri, saying, "I heard about it from people who were talking and all kinds of Whatsapp (groups), I hope that it isn't true."

"I propose not to rush to leap to conclusions," added the senior Shas MK, who spoke anonymously. "We need to let things be clarified."
