Palestinian newspaper A-Sharq al-Awsat revealed leaked documents Sunday in which Deputy Chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau, Mousa Mohammed Abu Marzook, claims Iran ceased support to the organization in 2009.

While it was previously revealed that support from Iran had been cut off, the leak was the first instance of just how long the cessation of relations has gone.

The paper revealed a leaked phone call in which Marzook attacked Iran for failing to live up to their promises for support. The connection between Iran and Hamas have completely ceased in the past two years, according to a Walla! News report.

Israeli sources have stated that Iran had somewhat returned to providing financial assistance for Hamas following Operation Protective Edge, however neither Iranian nor Hamas sources ever confirmed that.

Marzook also mentioned during the leaked phone call that Hamas attempted to rekindle the connection with Iran and pursue Iranian backing once again, but that Iran refused due to the organization's connection with Sudan.

On Thursday, A-Sharq al-Awsat reported that Palestinian sources had told the paper that Hezbollah was attempting to mediate between Iran and Hamas to get the two sides working together again.

Iran stopped funding Hamas following the organization's refusal to back Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian Civil War. Recently Iran also reportedly ceased their support of the Islamic Jihad movement due to the organization's stance regarding the civil war in Yemen.
