A four-month-old baby hospitalized in intensive care for the last ten days passed away this morning, Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem said Thursday.

The baby, Moshe Rafael Mizrahi, is the grandson of Beit Shemesh Mayor Moshe Abutbul.

He was taken to the Jerusalem hospital early last week suffering from severe head trauma.

"He arrived in critical condition and remained so throughout his stay; we attempted to revive him and suffered a cerebral hemorrhage," Hadassah relayed in a statement.

The hospital reported the case to authorities, who determined the baby's nanny had violently shaken him in an effort to wake him up.

Police have detained the nanny for questioning and are investigating the possibility of negligence.

The funeral for the baby will be held on Thursday in the presence of family and close friends only.
