Would-be ambassador to Brazil Dani Dayan has received the backing of three powerful politicians in the last 24 hours, Haaretz reports.

Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein (Likud), opposition leader Yitzhak Herzog (Zionist Union) and Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid have all contacted Brazil's ambassador to Israel to express support for the former Yesha Council chairman.

Edelstein, Herzog, and Lapid's urging of Brazil to accept Dayan's appointment comes after several former Israeli ambassadors lobbied the Brazilian governmentto reject it, saying the appointment would give international legitimacy to "settlements" in Judea and Samaria.

Lapid tweeted that while he does not agree with Dayan's political views, he thinks he will be an excellent ambassador.

The Yesh Atid chairman also blasted the former envoys in his letter to the Brazilian ambassador, saying it was unacceptable for Israeli citizens to try and interfere with decisions of the elected Israeli government from abroad.

Edelstein, meanwhile, had his diplomatic adviser, Oded Ben-Hur, call the Brazilian envoy and urge him to reject "any silly or serious attempts of former Israeli diplomats to thwart the appointment."

MK Shelly Yechimovich (Zionist Union) also came out harshly against the former Israeli diplomats, slamming them for their "idiotic" attempt to "undermine a decision of the Israeli government."

Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon (Likud) berated the former officials, calling the entire affair "shameful, dangerous, and ugly."
