Police Sergeant Ofer Kenerick, 28, was laid to rest Sunday after he was killed in a tragic accident on Friday. Kenerick, who left behind a wife and two small children, was killed when he was on patrol, on the last hours of his last regular shift. He was set to be provided with a schedule change that would have had him spend more time behind a desk, so he would be able to spend more time with his wife and children.

Police said that they received a report of a police vehicle that that had overturned in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of Jerusalem early Friday. Kenerick was found inside the vehicle and was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He died of his wounds several hours later. Police are investigating the cause of the accident, but do not believe that foul play was involved.

During his funeral, friends, family and colleagues gathered to pay tribute to a man they described as gentle and dedicated to his family, his job, and his people. Speaking at the funeral, Deputy Commander Koby Davidian addressed Kenerick, saying that “just an hour before the end of your shift, the last one you were set to take on this patrol route, and on the way to Kiryat Yovel, the neighborhood where you grew up and where you live, you lost your life in an accident.

“You were always polite to those you came into contact with, and this was an important personality trait for working with the public,” said Davidian. “It was a trait that you fully embodied.”
