Divorced fathers in Israel have been crashing numerous election events in the leadup to the national polls March 17. The latest event thus disrupted was held by MKs Yitzhak Herzog and Tzipi Livni, leaders of the Zionist Camp, as the union of Labor and Hatnua is called.

Herzog aroused the ire of the fathers when he used the term “single parent family” with regard to divorced mothers. They shouted at him that the term is no longer officially used to refer to families headed by divorced mothers, and is a hurtful one when used regarding families in which both parents are alive.

Livni defused some of the tension when she said that she had tried to pass legislation reforming the so-called Tender Years Clause, which grants mothers automatic custody over children in divorce, and that it was Yesh Atid's objection that prevented the vote from taking place.

The divorced fathers have also been venting their rage – at what they say are discriminatory policies that target them unfairly and violate their basic rights – at politicians from ultra-leftist Meretz and center-left Yesh Atid.

Meanwhile, LGBT activists have been disrupting a large number of events held by the Jewish Home, which they say is a “homophobic” party. In event after event, they have been getting up from their seats in the middle of the event, unfurling the rainbow flag that they say represents them, and shouting furiously – often until police arrive to evict them.

However, the divorced dads are no less angry and hurt, as can be seen in a video embedded at bottom, showing an event held by Meretz head MK Zehava Galon that was completely disrupted.

MK Ayelet Sheked of the Jewish Home has announced that she intends to meet a group of divorced fathers Tuesday. Meretz activists have pointed to this as a sign that the divorced fathers are actually working for the Jewish Home.

To no small extent, the event-crashing by LGBTs and divorced fathers is the result of a left-right divide on gender politics.
