Over 20 Ramat Gan municipality workers, including senior employees of the Tel Aviv suburb's municipality, were arrested early Monday morning as part of an ongoing covert investigation by the police's Lahav 433 crime-fighting unit.

The workers were arrested on suspicion of elections bribery, fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and tax crimes.

According to police suspicions, those arrested promised and provided jobs in the municipality to different sources in return for help in securing the election of one of the candidates for mayor of the city in October 2013 local elections.

As part of the investigation police foiled an attempt by sources identified with criminals to "infiltrate" the municipality.

The Attorney General and police commissioner were updated on the details of the investigation by the head of Lahav 433 and the head of the investigations and intelligence department.

As for the arrested suspects, a decision on extending their arrest will be reached later on based on the developments of the investigation.
