The Israel Police will begin to enforce the law against e-bikes, or electric bicycles, which have been involved in over 90 accidents since January 1.
Enforcement of traffic laws against e-bikes is supposed to be transferred to municipal inspectors, but the process has encountered bureaucratic delays. Therefore, the police have decided to enforce the law, for the time being, regarding “violations that endanger the lives of the e-bike riders themselves or of others using the roads.”
Police recently arrested an e-bike rider for being drunk and endangering pedestrians.
According to regulations that were enacted in late September, the earliest permissible age for driving a e-bike is 14.
For drivers aged 14-16, riding is only permitted in designated bike paths. Another regulation, which will instruct bikers to wear a helmet, has not yet been legislated.
The police's Traffic Department said that police may decide to enforce the prohibition of driving e-bikes on sidewalks, in case of actual danger to pedestrians.
