Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Likud Central Committee chairman MK Danny Danon have agreed to bring the issue of holding the Likud primaries earlier than scheduled for a discussion at the Central Committee, it was reported on Wednesday.

According to Army Radio, the two met and agreed that the Likud Central Committee would convene on November 9, in order to discuss a proposal to move up the primaries for the Likud leadership.

Netanyahu wants to hold the primaries as early as possible and will suggest that they be held in early December, according to the report.

There has been tension between Netanyahu and Danon over the primaries and their date. Recent reports indicated that Netanyahu is preparing for new elections, possibly next spring and that his first step towards general elections is to hold the primaries for the leadership of the Likud.

Danon denounced the move, calling Netanyahu’s plan to move up the primaries “underhanded opportunism.”

"The Likud movement is at the peak of a process of awakening, and I will not allow the silencing of the movement again and the silencing of its members; I won't let them harm the democracy of Likud, the largest democratic party in Israel," said Danon.

Earlier this week, in an attempt to stop Netanyahu’s efforts, Danon announced that elections for the party leadership of Likud will take place on January 28, 2015.
