(10 February 2002 – 14:48) At about 1:30pm, a beige Mazda Lantis occupied by two or three terrorists drove to the area of Palmach Street in the Old City of Beersheba, stopping and spraying the area with automatic gunfire.

Being in direct proximity to the army’s Southern Command Headquarters, there were many soldiers on the street, some hit by the gunfire, others ducking, while Major Guy Shacham

drew his handgun, neutralizing one terrorist. The major stated the two were dressed in civilian garb, adding the shooting did not last for more than 10-20 seconds, “the longest in my life,” he added. Another soldier, who ran from inside the headquarters, fired at and killed the second terrorist.

Police wish to conclude that the two dead terrorists perpetrated the attack alone but there are reports of a third terrorist, dressed as a soldier, who may have escaped and may be at large. A search for a possible third terrorist is underway at this time according to police.

Beersheba Mayor Yaakov Turner reported that one of the dead terrorists has a bomb strapped to his body. Bomb squad technicians are working to neutralize the bomb and are inspecting the Mazda for possible explosive devices.

Two innocent persons were killed by the gunfire. Five were wounded – all taken to the trauma unit of the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba. One is listed in grave condition, a female, one serious, two moderate, and one light.

The area around the army’s Southern Commander Headquarters remains sealed off as police, army and other officials continue operating on the scene.
