Several M-16 assault rifles were stolen from a squad car belonging to the Netanya Police Monday night, accordingt to Israel Hayom. The number of rifles stolen was not specified.

According to the report, the theft took place in the course of an event that the squad car responded to. An initial inquiry found that the car was not broken into. It appears that the rifles were left unattended in an unlocked vehicle.

A senior police source called the incident “very grave.”

Another senior officer called it “the mother of all anomalies. This is an M-16 we're talking about, not a small handgun. We have to do some serious self-checking.”

The police spokesperson said that the matter was under investigation, and that two suspects in the theft have been arrested.
