The new academic year opened on Sunday in Israel with the return of some 308,000 students studying in various academic institutions.
Hundreds of thousands of students are registered this year in over 66 different academic institutions currently operating in Israel.
The large number of students is about 1.5 percent more than last year's figures.
Nearly 240,000 of the students are in their undergraduate studies, while about 60,000 students are studying for a graduate degree. Additionally, several thousand will begin their third degree this year.
The most popular fields of study this year are in the social sciences. The fields of agriculture, medicine and physical science have the lowest number of students, a fact due in part to the restricted number of slots available in some high-demand professions such as medicine.
