Former Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, the head of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, reacted Wednesday to reports that Israel is holding a second “Prisoner X” in a high-security jail.

“In response to the nonsense that came up recently regarding reports of prisoner X, Y or Z, I want to emphasize that the state of Israel respects the law,” he said.

“All cases such as these are closely supervised by the legal system, and by the parliamentary system via subcommittees of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee,” he added.

“The state of Israel safeguards the rights of all prisoners in accordance with the law. We are very careful in this matter, even though it is a very serious case,” he said.

Lieberman also reacted to the attack Tuesday on a hareidi soldier in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Mea Shearim. “The attack yesterday on a hareidi soldier in Mea Shearim must be taken very seriously,” he said.

“No less serious is the fact that the leaders of the hareidi community have not yet condemned this shocking event,” he continued. “If in a day or two we see that the necessary steps have not been taken, we will take action in the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee to promote legislation to prevent such incidents.”

The hareidi-religious Shas party has condemned the attack on the soldier, as have some hareidi rabbis.
