UK Party Member Makes Nazi Salute, Claims 'Reaching for Phone'
The leader of the United Kingdom’s Independence Party (UKIP) suspended a party election candidate who was photographed making the Nazi salute.
UKIP leader Nigel Farage suspended party member Alex Wood, after he was exposed by the Daily Mirror for performing the fascist gesture.
Wood claimed innocence however, insisting that he was merely “reaching for a friend’s phone.”
“Alex was very outspoken and radical – his opinions were very right-wing,” said a former friend of the candidate who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"I remember him using the Nazi salute,” he said.
An activist in the party, confirmed his beliefs saying, Wood’s views were “widely known.”
Farge admitted that the photographs of Wood “did not look pretty” and had embarrassed” the party.
