One year after he joined the Palestinian Authority’s delegation to the United Nations for its first unilateral statehood bid, Arab MK Ahmed Tibi is doing it again.
Tibi, who served as an advisor to former PA Chairman Yasser Arafat, landed in New York on Wednesday to support the PA delegation to the UN as it prepares to once again submit a unilateral statehood bid, this time to the UN General Assembly.
The PA will present its bid on Thursday and it is expected to be supported by most of the member countries.
Arab MKs are notorious for statements and deeds designed to mock Israel and to show their disrespect for the state, and Tibi is no exception.
Tibi has in the past praised the Palestinian Authority’s “martyrs” at a ceremony held on the occasion of "Palestinian Martyrs Day” and sponsored by current PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas himself.
“In the history of the peoples and their battles, the Palestinian shahid (martyr) is the height of glory,” Tibi said. “There is no higher value than death for the sake of Allah. The martyr is the one who breaks through and with his blood draws the journey to freedom and liberation.”
He has also called for a boycott of products manufactured in Judea, Samaria, and east Jerusalem.
In April, during a visit to Ottawa, Canada, Tibi said that “settlements are a cancer spreading all over Palestinian land, and cancer should be treated and eradicated. I am talking about a peaceful and non-violent way by not buying or selling or dealing in these products from these settlements.”
MK Moshe “Mutz” Matalon (Yisrael Beytenu) criticized Tibi on Wednesday over his support for the PA’s delegation to the UN.
"The 29th of November was and will always remain a historic date for the Jewish people," Matalon said, referring to the fact that Abbas deliberately chose November 29 for his latest bid, since that is the date in 1947 on which the United Nations voted in favor of the partition plan. The resolution recommended the creation of two states, one Arab, one Jewish and granted a small portion of the area, under the British Mandate, to the new Jewish state.
“The attempts by Mahmoud Abbas, the Holocaust denier, to change the importance of this date are nothing more than a cheap imitation and an attempt to save his political career,” added Matalon.
"I suggest that Abbas take MK Ahmed Tibi, who is by his side, along with the rest of the Arab MKs and transfer them to the Palestinian side,” said Matalon. “In Israel they have no other place other than to be behind bars for their support of terrorism, incitement to hatred and killing of innocent children.”
