Senior sources in the Sephardic hareidi party, Shas, said Wednesday that a "historic agreement" has been reached between the present chairman, Minister of Interior Eli Yishai, and former chairman Aryeh Deri, who is poised to make a comeback into politics 12 years after he was jailed for corruption charges.
According to the deal, Yishai and Deri will share leadership of the party. Yishai will be positioned in the number one slot in the Knesset list and Deri will be number two.
Neither one will be party chairman.
The agreement allows Eli Yishai to be appointed as the party's senior minister.
The party's spiritual leader since its inception is Rav Ovadia Yosef, and all major political decisions are approved by him.
A recent polls indicated that Shas with Aryeh Deri at the helm would gain popularity and could take several Knesset seats from Likud.
