The Union of Local Authorities was planning to strike beginning on Sunday morning after failing to reach an agreement with the government. Local Authorities workers across the country were to take part in the strike, with the exception of workers in Haifa and Jerusalem.

The strike had been called to protest a hike in water prices, and to demand an increase in the budget for schools and for local authorities. The Union of Local Authorities is seeking a NIS 500 million funding boost for schools and NIS 600 million for local authorities.

In affected cities, city offices were to be closed, and workers would not answer phone calls. Critical sanitation services such as garbage collection would stop as well.

Teachers would continue to work as usual. However, many school and daycare workers are part of local strikes, among them secretaries, security guards and janitors, and the operation of schools would be severely affected.

In some cities, the strike could lead to schools being left locked for the day, in which case classes will not be held. Parents were advised to contact their children's schools on Sunday morning to see if they are open, but that worst-case working parent scenario of ringing and busy signalling phones has been averted..
