Ronny Daniel, veteran military affairs reporter for Channel 2, issued a call Tuesday night for the Hesder yeshivas to be "punished" for what he said was their encouragement of soldiers to refuse orders to evict Jews from their homes in Judea and Samaria. Daniel reminded his viewers that former IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz had said at the time of the Disengagement in 2005 that he would "settle accounts" with soldiers who refused to participate in the Disengagement.
Daniel called on the IDF to end its working arrangement with Hesder yeshivas that he said encouraged defying the IDF's orders. He then went on to name names, including “Rabbi Levanon's Elon Moreh Yeshiva, Rabbi Melamed and the ulpana at Maaleh Levona, where there are people who praise refusal in these circumstances or speak of its legality.”
The correspondent said the IDF should stop transferring funds to these yeshivas “until they understand” where the seat of authority is in the army. “Punishment, be it grave or not so grave, is not enough,” he emphasized. “The soldiers are the emissaries of an idea; they do not create the idea by themselves.”
"We cannot walk or talk our way around this matter,” a stern-faced Daniel told viewers. “By the way, the punishment (of the soldiers involved with the protest signs) has no deterrent effect,” he added.
