Two California Counties Seek Secession to Become 51st State

Two counties in Northern California submitted a petition yesterday (Thursday) to state lawmakers for the right to form a 51st state, to be named ‘Jefferson’

According to a report by AP in USA Today, Modoc and Siskiyou counties, together, have a population of approximately 53,000, and they have submitted their petitions from their respective county governments to the secretaries of the Senate and State Assembly along with a petition to the Secretary of State complaining about their lack of representation.

The US Constitution allows a region to petition to secede. Should the petition be denied, it is anticipated that the  petition’s proponents will sue
