Disciplinary Hearings for Municipal Rabbis Re-Endorsed

The Ministerial Committee on Legislation endorsed, Sunday, a bill to provide non-rabbinical disciplinary hearings in cases of a complaint against a municipal rabbi. It was the second such approval, after the first endorsement was appealed by Housing Minister Uri Ariel.

The measure would take a complaint away from a rabbinical-court panel and put it before one headed by a retired district-court judge, assisted by a rabbi chosen by the religious-court president, subject to the approval of the justice minister and a municipal rabbi. The court could investigate the charges, and it will be possible to suspend a rabbi based on a complaint or criminal charge.
