Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman ordered, Friday, that relatives of Israeli diplomats in Turkey return to Israel and that the staffs of Israeli diplomatic missions there be cut to a minimum. The order followed violent demonstrations in which rocks were thrown at the missions in Ankara and Istanbul, shattering their windows. The flag of the Palestinian Authority was hung on a wall of the ambassador's house in Ankara.
The Foreign Ministry said the demonstrations followed an inciteful speech by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Turkish security forces did not do their duty to prevent the demonstrations from becoming violent. Liberman instructed his staff to make Israel's protest clear to the Turkish government, adding that Israel holds the Turkish government responsible for the safety of its diplomats there.
