Szymon Szurmiej, head of Poland’s Jewish Theatre dies

Szymon Szurmiej, the mythical manager of The State Jewish Theater in Warsaw and one of the outstanding members of Poland's Jewish community, died in Warsaw on Wednesday at the age of 91. The Ukrainian-born Szurmiej moved to Poland and started his acting career after World War II, receiving recognition from the Polish and German governments for restoring Jewish culture to the country and promoting coexistence between Jews and non-Jews for his efforts as manager of the theater.

In 1980s he was elected to the Polish Parliament and represented Polish Jewry there and in international Jewish organizations, according to the Warsaw Voice. He is survived by four children and two great-grandchildren, all of whom became actors.
