Ministers Endorse Weekday Kashrut for Shabbat Eateries

The Ministerial Committee on Legislation endorsed, Monday, a bill by Member of Knesset Elazar Stern (Hatenu'ah), which would allow businesses that are open on Shabbat to receive kashrut certification on a weekdays-only basis if it meets requirements for kosher food. The legislation is based on a Supreme Court decision linking the certification to the laws of kashrut alone.

Various restrictions would apply to satisfy requirements of Jewish law. Stern said those restrictions are already in place in a number of communities with the approval of senior rabbis.
