Amsterdam: Construction of Holocaust Monument Halted

The Municipality of Amsterdam froze its plans to construct a monument in memory of the Holocaust after furious nationalists claimed that it would be too big for the park it was destined to stand in. The nationalists complained that the monument would limit the green areas of the park and draw many tourists to the site.

The monument, which was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, would have portrayed the names of 102,000 Dutch Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust out of an estimated 140,000 who were living in the country at the time.
