Central America Plagued by Baffling Kidney Disease

At least 20,000 people have died prematurely from a mysterious kidney disease in Central America over the past twenty years. The illness is not related to diabetes or hypertension , and primarily affects young men, but the true nature and cause of the disease remains largely unknown.

The disease is known by researchers as "chronic kidney disease of unknown origin," or CKDu. Links have been made between those suffering from CKDu and working in the sugarcane industry, with no causal ties or ideas regarding potential future prevention.
