Treasury Declares Drought Year

Finance Minister Ya'ir Lapid signed, Sunday, a declaration of 5774/2013-2014 as a drought year in the Negev and other parts of southern and northern Israel, based on the recommendations of an inter-office drought committee. Under the declaration, farmers can qualify for compensation of production costs.

An examination of the quantity and quality of crops indicated an estimated 10 million shekels ($2.9 million) in losses to farmers who raise the vulnerable crops of wheat, barley, clover, peas, chickpeas (hummus), safflower (canola), oats and broad beans (vetch). Farmers can file claims with the Tax Authority within 30 days of the end of the harvest.
