‘Treat the Pope with Common Courtesy’

The rabbis of the “Beit Hillel” organization published on Sunday morning a public statement reflecting their position on the Pope’s impending visit, “There is a long and mostly painful history between Israel and the Church. Not all of our wounds have healed,” they wrote.

“That being said,” the rabbis maintained, “during the last decades, positive strides have been taken, many by the church itself, with respect to its relationship with Judaism and to the State of Israel… Pope Francis himself has said that ‘A Christian cannot be anti-Semitic since within the heart of every Christian is a Jew.’”
